American Period

During the American period two different styles evolved. These included: Federal (American Neoclassical) and American Victorian. Duncan Phyfe was known as a Scotsman and Regency Empire. He was a superb craftsman and had skills in carving. The Klismos chair was simplified and had the cornucopia legs. The Hitchcock chairs made by Lambert Hitchcock, were black with gold paint and stenciled designed fruit, leaves, arrows, flowers and eagles. The shaker style buildings had two entrances, stairways, sleeping quarters, and dining tables. The shaker style values hard work and discipline. The architecture included round barns.

The American Victorian period 1837-1901 and the architecture was considered elaborate, romantic, and emotional. This architecture would show the amount of money an owner had as well. The interiors were dark with heavy drapery and wood flooring and the exteriors were painted with bright colors. This was also the time of technical developments and machines were able to carve and stamp furniture. Gothic tracery designs and pointed arches were a big style in architecture during this time as well. John Belter was a craftsman for furniture in the American Victorian period and he created the triple back sofa.
